Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes by Carl Waldman and Molly Braun (2006) - 360 pages
Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes at Amazon.com

Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes is a comprehensive reference work discussing more than 150 Indian tribes of North America, as well as prehistoric peoples and civilizations. Organized alphabetically by tribe or group, the informative, accessible text summarizes the historical record - such as locations, migrations, contacts with non-Indians, wars - and includes present-day tribal affairs. The book also covers traditional Indian lifeways, including diet, housing, transportation, tools, clothing, art, legends and rituals, as well as language families. More than 250 beautifully detailed original color illustrations enhance the text, and 11 maps show the various Indian culture areas in addition to tribal locations, providing a helpful frame of reference. Numerous cross-references help the reader master the material, as do organizational lists, an ample glossary, a bibliography, and index. This revised edition updates tribal histories to the end of the 20th century. Current preferred tribal names are used where appropriate. Written and illustrated by the same team responsible for Atlas of the North American Indian, the revised edition of Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes is sure to be an essential reference work in the field.

Carl Waldman, a graduate of Hamilton College, is a former archivist for the New York State Historical Association. A freelance writer, Waldman is the author of numerous books on Native Americans, including Atlas of the North American Indian (selected by the American Library Association as an "Outstanding Reference Book of 1985"), Who Was Who in Native American History, Timelines of Native American History, and Word Dance: The Language of Native American Culture, as well as the original Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes, which was named by the New York Public Library as a "1988 Outstanding Reference Book of the Year" and chosen by School Library Journal as one of the "Best References of 1987".

Molly Braun has provided illustrations, maps, and photographs for a number of books on Native Americans and American history, including Atlas of the North American Indian, Atlas of Westward Expansion, Word Dance: The Language of Native American Culture, Timelines of Native American History, and Voices of the Wind: Native American Legends. An educator and freelance illustrator and cartographer, she works in the New York State public school system.
