Sioux Falls Free Thinkers endorse Zentropa (Europa) for showing
how the American Occupying Forces starved, shot, hung, destroyed
the infrastructure, and made it almost impossible to survive for the
German people. Men women and children died by the thousands
and the American military kept their war crimes all under wraps.

Praised as one of the top films of the year, Zentropa is an erotic, passionate thriller delivering nonstop, suspense-filled excitement. In this Hitchcock-like tale, Leo Kessler, an American visiting devastated postwar Germany, gets seduced by a beautiful woman and suddenly finds himself caught in a never-ending web of mystery and intrigue. Leo's nightmarish journey takes him through a hypnotic maze of romance, passion and betrayal - leading to acts of terrorism - and finally murder. With its many plot twists and heart-stopping surprises, this riveting, seductive thriller is sure to entertain from beginning to end!

"You will now listen to my voice… On the count of ten, you will be in Europa … " So begins Max von Sydow's opening narration to Lars von Trier's hypnotic Europa, a fever dream in which American pacifist Leopold Kessler (Jean-Marc Barr) stumbles into a job as a sleeping-car conductor for the Zentropa railways in a Kafkaesque postwar Frankfurt. With its gorgeous black-and-white and color imagery and meticulously re-created (if then nightmarishly deconstructed) costumes and sets, Europa is one of the great Danish filmmaker's weirdest and most wonderful works, a runaway-train ride to an oddly futuristic past.
